ChatGPT, build me a BIM model!

The world of artificial intelligence has developed rapidly in recent times: more advanced models are appearing every day, with applications in almost every industry. In architecture, the use of AI initially spread mainly in the field of visual design – nowadays, with just a few clicks, we can create spectacular, almost lifelike images of our projects using Midjourney, DALL-E, or Stable Diffusion.

However, a spectacular image is only the beginning: in the actual design work, there are still many steps ahead of us before we can create a truly structured, accurate BIM model in the special technical software designed for this purpose.

We were curious to see

ChatGPT + Revit = AI assistant for modeling

We started development with this simple recipe when we imagined an idyllic world where we no longer had to create each model by hand – just a simple sentence, and ChatGPT would perform the modeling tasks.

We have developed a custom add-on for Revit that functions as a chat window: users can enter commands here, and in the background, the request is sent to the ChatGPT API, which returns the exact prompt that Revit automatically executes.

The biggest advantage of this method is that it is not tied to any predetermined vocabulary or language – we can chat with it in Hungarian, English, or even a mixture of both. The figure clearly shows that we can switch languages even within a single chat; the system interprets both without any problems and executes the commands accordingly.

Let’s see it in action

In the short video below, we show how our proprietary AI assistant built into Revit works through a few demo examples. You can see that it accurately interprets the parameters and instructions given in the text command and even performs reliably in documentation tasks, such as automatically filling in BIM model element parameters.

But BuildEXT Robo, Revit’s AI assistant, is capable of more than just simple modeling commands: it can also perform more complex tasks, such as creating custom filters that automatically highlight elements in the model with specific parameters, even in a color of your choice.

Where to next?

It is already clear that artificial intelligence is a great help in creative work, but with this development, it now provides real support even in the implementation phase of the model.

Thanks to this, multi-step modeling processes can now be performed with a single sentence, which not only enables more efficient work but also contributes to making our models more structured and, perhaps most importantly, more machine-readable. This makes our BIM models easy to integrate into other systems, allows data to be transferred automatically, and provides a real business advantage.

AI – or Robo – will certainly not replace a well-trained team of designers. But with continuous development and integration, it can become an increasingly useful and indispensable member of our team.

Digital development is unstoppable; the only question is when we will catch up with it. We believe that the offices that will enjoy the greatest advantage are those that are open to new solutions promptly.
