So much for the Holy Grail of BIM, the collision search

During the Second World War, it was mapped where returning aircraft had been hit and reinforced there.

Only later did it turn out that they shouldn’t have been there, as the ones that were hit here were able to return.

In BIM-based design, we like to talk about clash detection as the holy grail that brings huge improvements in the quality of designs.

In fact, in an efficient design workflow, there should be no room for error, also known as clashes, because the designers in each discipline should be able to see each other’s work as they design.

That some designers or design systems don’t know or don’t recognise this is as much a charming coincidence as the reinforcement of airplanes.
